The only real counter to Bronze Mace Hoplites is to make Hoplites of your own, something that only a few civs really want to tech into. When Mace gets to Bronze, they are arguably the strongest civ in the game at that point, as they have the strongest Hoplites in Bronze thanks to 2 extra PA, meaning that at most, Bronze archers will be doing 2 damage to them. Macedonian - They unfortunately miss some key techs like Engineering, but when you have cheap Siege or Centurions with 5 Pierce Armor, 4x resistance to conversion, and extra LOS you don't really need to worry about that. On top of that, they also get Alchemy in Iron, granting them the honor of being the only civ in AoE:DE to get +2 attack on a ranged unit! Their tech tree is more open than Assyrian as well, since they get HHA, Centurions, Scythes, and Elephants. Hittite - Like Assyrians, they suffer the minor setback of lacking Slingers, but having +1 Pierce Attack on all archers from the start of the game is an incredibly powerful bonus, especially where you don't start seeing PA upgrades until mid-to-late Bronze (Bronze Shield is very expensive for early Bronze, and most civs likely will open Bronze with Cavalry, not Swords).
Assyrians are a little bit worse off, since they lack Slingers, Nobility, Alchemy, and only get Chain Mail and Engineering in DE/UPatch. They both have great rush opportunities - with Yamato getting cheaper Cavalry, and Assyrians getting faster-firing archers. Yamato/Assyrian - 10% faster villagers is great for both exploring and minimizing travel time when gathering resources.
However, I feel they start to fall off in Iron because they have a horrible Gov't Ctr ( no Iron techs at all). Spending only 40 food per villager for the whole game saves you a ton of food, especially as it puts you at ~200 more food than non-Shang players when you advance to Tool, assuming you go for a standard Fast Bronze. The game uses the Genie Engine, a 2D sprite-based game engine. The game allows the user to act as the leader of an ancient civilization by advancing it through four ages (the Stone, Tool, Bronze, and Iron Ages.
The only other civ in the series with a bonus like that is India in AOE2, and their bonus starts at 10% and increases with each age. Age of Empires (AoE) is a real-time strategy video game based on history, developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft, and the first game in the Age of Empires series. Shang - 20% cheaper villies is incredibly OP bonus since you get it from the start of the game. He told me that Portuguese are **** on water compared to vikings, and not to dismiss the vikings, I think the portuguese are still a great water civ.Disclaimer, I'm not a competitive player. (Just for notice, yesterday I played TI 2v2, my teammate chose Koreans and his plan was to trush the opponent's island while I got map control) He wanted me to pick Vikings but I picked Portuguese because I felt that feudal water control was more important. I'm tired of having continuous discussions and arguments with my friends about what civs are better and I would like to know what the not-so-noobs think.īecause it is a map now in the map pool, let's focus on Team Islands, but please share if you feel that others are better for other water maps.Īnd also, let's focus more on water control, although landing is much more common now, but share your thoughts anyway.įinally, I added a poll to survey which one yo think is the best water civ, but I want to hear insights about all of them.
I guess it also depends in which age we are talking about. With the new balance changes (since African Kingdoms) it is not so clear who is the best civ in water.
